Working Together for the Common Good
Chartered January 20th, 1953, Burlington Rotary Club (#5939) is justly proud of their accomplishments. Past and present Club members working together have achieved much for mankind through the spirit of the Rotary credo, “Service Above Self”, and by applying the principles of the 4-Way Test.
High Ideals and Rolled-Up Sleeves
The Club’s approximately 53 members act as a service organization. Their Mission: raise money to empower the community.
Enriching the Community
In the spirit of Rotary this Club has performed an extensive list of services, benefiting the individual and community:
- Annually, scholarships totaling $6,000 for academic and $1,000 for art are awarded to college-bound local high school seniors. Our goal is to increase that by $2,000.
- Support is given the Home for Aged Women in Burlington City, a century-old organization that provides a safe living environment for elderly women who have no means of support.
- We have partnered with the YMCA of Burlington to provide free swimming lessons to disadvantaged children.
- We provide dictionaries to all third grade students in Burlington City and Burlington Township.
- Contributions aid reading and educational programs run by the Library Company of Burlington.
- Two portable defibrillators purchased for the Burlington City Police Department are carried in police cars each day.
- We support various community programs that serve the youth of our area.
- Private support of local people in need.
- Support and sponsor the Intaract Program for high school students which teaches leadership, good citizenship and the importance of community service.
For over 50 years Burlington Rotary has nurtured deep roots in the community. Their assistance and guidance is appreciated by many students, seniors, and others, thanks to Rotary support of RYLA, Burlington City High School Band, YMCA, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, civic groups, educational organizations and more.
Embracing the World
In other ways, the local Club assists in the fellowship of humans worldwide...
- Money and supplies sent to a
Armando Rosenberg Home and School. An orphanage in the poorest barrio in Santo Domingo,
the capital of the Dominican Republic. Our help includes sending generators, refrigerators, furniture, school and medical supplies and clothing.
- A lasting association of friendship was forged with the Rotary Club of Bridlington, Humberside, England.
- Contributions to the Rotary Foundation which sponsors programs that foster international understanding.
- Active participation in the International Student Exchange Program.
The 4-Way Test
Rotarians are concerned with promoting high ethical standards in their professional lives. One of the world’s most widely printed and quoted statements of business ethics is The 4-Way Test, created in 1932 by Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor. It asks the following four questions:
Of the things we think, say or do:
- Is it the TRUTH?
- Is it FAIR to all concerned?
- Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
- Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
